2015 Drop in Poverty is Largest on Record Since 1999

Written by: Ashley Edwards, Chief, Poverty Statistics Branch

Estimates released today from the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC) show the official poverty rate in the United States declined to 13.5 percent in 2015, a 1.2 percentage point drop from 2014. The last time poverty rates declined this much from year to year was from 1998 to 1999 – making this the largest decline in poverty rates over the past 16 years.

Since 1959, the first year for which the U.S. Census Bureau released poverty estimates, there has been only one year with a larger decline in poverty rates, 1966, when poverty declined by 2.6 percentage points following the implementation of a revised methodology for processing income data. poverty-blog-fig-1
Between 2014 and 2015, poverty rates declined for many different demographic groups. Poverty rates fell for both males and females. In 2015, 12.2 percent of males were in poverty while 14.8 percent of females were in poverty.

Poverty rates declined for all three major age groups between 2014 and 2015. Poverty decreased to 12.4 percent for people aged 18 to 64, to 8.8 percent for people aged 65 and older, and declined to 19.7 percent for children under 18.

Poverty rates also declined for most racial and ethnic groups in the population. In 2015, the poverty rate for non-Hispanic whites declined to 9.1 percent. Poverty rates for Hispanics decreased to 21.4 percent in 2015 while the poverty rate for blacks fell to 24.1 percent. Asians did not experience a statistically significant change in their poverty rates between 2014 and 2015.

In 2015, poverty rates decreased in three of the four regions: the South, West and the Midwest. The Northeast did not experience a statistically significant change in the poverty rate between 2014 and 2015.

This is amazing info – I wish more people were reporting this… politics aside… this is amazing info.

Well, this is rife with dubious protocol & selective data. The supposed “change” has been kleptocracy doling out counterfeit fiat currency to corporateers, cronies, & among cities, counties, & states along with propping up the fraud-ridden equity market scams that pension funds have been fooled into relying upon as well as goobernment hiring while exploiting & imposing austerity upon others. While the baseline data has been unrealistic with poverty levels, income, & else amid much omission, the purported changes have been because of the kleptocracy indulgence as the local levels from the cities, counties, & states are on the Federal dole with so many various subsidies for maintenance & operations along with funding for programs meant for alleviating disparity among veterans including retirees, particularly toward housing (among other issues, I have personal experience with the corruption involved with this matter).

    Very dubious if not fraud-ridden.

While those local kleptocracies have inordinate surpluses in their own socio-economic & other programs, yet as worse they exploit & neglect those they are supposed to serve as well as seek Federal levels of financial support when the local levels should get accountable for disaster preparedness & recovery since they promote many of the risks & elevate the hazard levels; hoarding, misappropriation, malfeasance, fraud, discrimination, are among much injustice, disparity, & corruption since they fill their own coffers, serve their own self-interests, supplement their own compensation & pensions, provide their inordinate & undeserved benefits while others, like me, endure exploitation, poverty, injury, disparity, & worse. Yet how long can that be sustained? Look at how much goobernment hiring along with easy counterfeited fiat currency distributed among boondoggles & fraud-ridden non-productive unsustainable activities especially those that have evaded accountability (does anybody recall the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, TARP, … among other bail outs & indulgences that still happen in San Diego, CA) while disparity & austerity imposed upon others, including this honorable USN retiree. What about the abusive fraud, waste, & abuse pipeline indulged by the DoD 1033 program; that promotes occupation & oppression of communities while threatening, endangering, & harming citizens (including this honorable USN retiree)? How can medical treatment get further neglected along with more exploitation of this honorable USN retiree enduring injuries, injustice, poverty, theft, terrorism, & corruption in the kleptocracy San Diego, CA? Even the New York Times article mentions how an employee with the Veterans Administration kleptocracy gets indulged with health & education benefits, but those have been stolen from me. Much injury, injustice, & disparity endured while others are undeservedly indulged without accountability when corruption has proliferated. Keep on with the chiseling, welshing, betrayal, malfeasance, fraud, & propaganda …
